A college student died on the spot and five others sustained serious injuries, in a train accident, near Minjur railway station on Thursday.
The six students of Chandra Prabhu Jain College, Minjur, were walking on the railway track, after college, to the Minjur railway station. The train heading for Gummidipoondi from Chennai hit them.
Vinoth (21), a student from Washermenpet, died on the spot and five other students Vinoth Kumar (20), Majith (20), Pramod (20) and David Raj (20) of Thiruvottiyur and Raji (20) of Ennore, who were injured seriously, were admitted to the Stanley Government Medical College Hospital for treatment.
After the news about the death of college student broke out, a large number of students gathered near the railway station and blocked the services between Gummidipoondi and Chennai for nearly three hours. The students damaged Sullurpet-Chennai train and Gummidipoondi-Chennai train at Minjur railway station. The railway station also was damaged.
The local police dispersed the students, recovered Vinoth's body and sent it for postmortem. But within a few minutes, the students gathered at the station and pelted stones at the police and media persons. Other people at the station also sustained injuries.
Policemen withdrew from the spot as they were few. They came back again in a big numbers from the local station and chased away the students. Train services, which were hit, resumed only after 4 pm. Tiruvallur RDO Kumar and district superintendent of police V. Vanitha ,visited the spot and conducted an enquiry.
Strangely, the railway police were absent when the incident took place.
